Moving to Eastern Idaho
National portals treat every zip code the same. This page is for relocators who need to pick a city before they pick a house — with real Eastern Idaho workplaces in mind, not invented drive times.
INL has two different workplaces
Idaho National Laboratory is not one pin on a map. The Research and Education Campus (REC) and Fremont-area offices sit in Idaho Falls — labs, meetings, and town-campus jobs. The desert Site — roughly 890 square miles west of the city — holds nuclear research facilities, test ranges, and shift work that most employees reach by car or INL commuter bus, not a quick cross-town errand. “Near INL” is useless until you know which campus you report to.
Official INL commuter bus park-and-ride lots
INL operates employee commuter buses with designated park-and-ride lots. Official lots include multiple Idaho Falls load points (17th Street, Watersprings, Yellowstone, Westside-Broadway), Rigby (Rigby Park & Ride and Rigby ITD Park & Ride), Rexburg Park & Ride, and Blackfoot Park & Ride. Ammon is not listed as an INL commuter bus lot — if you bus to the desert Site, plan from an official lot or your own driveway, not “Ammon because it is close.”
Hospitals — three names you will hear
Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center (EIRMC) on Channing Way and Mountain View Hospital on Coronado Street are both in Idaho Falls. Madison Memorial Hospital — the Madisonhealth campus on East Main in Rexburg — serves Madison and Jefferson counties with clinics including Rigby Medical Center. Hospital hires usually shop the city closest to their campus, then widen the search once they know their shift pattern.
BYU-Idaho: faculty vs student housing
BYU-Idaho draws two different buyer pools. Faculty and staff often want Rexburg or Sugar City neighborhoods with quieter streets and longer-term ownership in mind. Students and investors chase different product — proximity to campus, parking, and unit count matter more than school-district acreage. Rental and occupancy rules change with ownership type and zoning; verify HOA covenants and city requirements on the specific address — do not assume Rexburg rules from a forum post.
Where to start by job type
INL town campus (Idaho Falls REC / Fremont offices)
Start in Idaho Falls; add Ammon if you want newer plats and Bonneville County schools.
INL desert Site (shift / bus commute)
Filter Idaho Falls for the widest board, Rigby if Jefferson County fits your family, or Rexburg if Madison County schools matter. Use an official INL park-and-ride lot — not Ammon — when you plan bus days.
Hospital (EIRMC or Mountain View)
Idaho Falls first; tour Ammon the same weekend for newer construction. Filter each city separately unless schools are the tie-breaker.
Hospital (Madison Memorial / Madisonhealth)
Rexburg and Rigby are the usual anchors; Sugar City when Rexburg inventory is tight.
BYU-Idaho faculty or staff
Rexburg plus Sugar City — same tour day, separate city filters unless you are deciding by school boundary.
Live city guides
Each page shows live Snake River MLS inventory for that city — no invented comps or placeholder homes.
